SIGNING OF THE SLEITI MSG MoU 2025 – 2028
The Sierra Leone Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (SLEITI) Multi-Stakeholder Group (MSG) has formally signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for 2025 – 2028. This document supersedes the previous MoU signed on March 25, 2021, marking a significant step in the collaborative framework aimed at enhancing transparency within the extractive industries in Sierra Leone.
The MoU represents a tripartite agreement, bringing together key stakeholders including the Government of Sierra Leone, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and Mining Companies operating within the oil, gas, and mineral sectors, with representation facilitated by the Chamber of Mines. By solidifying this partnership, the MSG seeks to establish a more robust governance structure around the management of Sierra Leone’s natural resources.
Through the EITI Standard, the MSG is charged with the responsibility of overseeing and coordinating the implementation of the EITI in Sierra Leone. The focus of the MSG extends beyond mere compliance; it aims to cultivate a culture of transparency and accountability that empowers all stakeholders and citizens. The goal is to promote the responsible management and utilization of natural resource wealth, ensuring it translates into sustainable economic growth and development for the country and its citizens.
This MoU is a critical document that outlines the roles and responsibilities of the MSG as it navigates the complexities of the extractive sector. The MoU was signed by representatives from each of the three constituencies of the MSG. The Honourable Minister of State, Office of the Vice President, and Chair of the SLEITI MSG, Madam Manty Tarawalli, signed on behalf of the Government. President of Chamber of Mines-Mr. Lima Sufian-Kargbo-representing mining companies, and Madam Cecilia Christiana Mattia-National Coordinator National Advocacy Coalition on Extractives (NACE) signed on behalf of Civil Society Organizations and the media.
Together, this MoU signals an ongoing commitment to foster an environment where transparency and accountability are woven into the fabric of the extractive industries, promoting equitable benefits from Sierra Leone’s natural resources for all citizens.
