Shaping a Transparent Future for Sierra Leone’s Resources.
The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) is the global standard for the good governance of oil, gas, and mineral resources. It seeks to strengthen public and corporate governance, promote understanding of natural resources management and provide the data to inform reforms for greater transparency and accountability in the extractive sector.
Sierra Leone became a member of the EITI in 2008 and established the Multi-stakeholder Group (MSG) to oversee its operations to ensure that the EITI process contributes to reforms in the management of the extractive sector.
SLEITI Multi-Stakeholder Group (MSG)
The MSG is a tripartite body comprising mining companies, civil society organizations (CSOs) and government representatives who are mandated by the 2023 EITI Standard to promote the integration of EITI into broader transparency efforts where the citizens take ownership of the EITI process. As part of its implementation, Sierra Leone has published twelve (12) EITI reports covering 2007 to 2023.
In the 2022 EITI validation to assess whether Sierra Leone is implementing the EITI Standard accordingly and whether the EITI is contributing to reforms in the extractive sector, the EITI Board awarded Sierra Leone an overall high score of 87.5.
